Women's Committee Chair

Greetings Brothers and Sisters of UAW Local 1050

We reviewed and appreciate your responses to our Women’s committee survey; overall you felt that we were doing a great job. Many of you would like to see more educational and advancement opportunities for women. You would also like to see a better work/life balance. For those of you that are planning retirement please stop by and pick up a copy of “What Women Need to Know about Retirement” A joint project of the Heinz Family and The Women’s Institute for a secure retirement.
I would like to acknowledge the fact that Sister Donna Gibson was our local’s first acting Female President for a day, and Sister Margret Zaleski was recently appointed to the board of the Hard Hatted Women’s Association. I would also like to acknowledge and welcome Gena Lovett our locations first Female Plant Manager.
The UAW Women’s Committee would like to thank all of you for helping to make the Breast Cancer Campaign, and The Community Women’s Shelter events such a success. We along with Karen, Marion, Helena, and Peggy were able to sign up over 20 women to receive mammograms, and collected more than $3,000 to help in the education and prevention of this horrible disease. Our members also distributed literature at the twilight lighting ceremony, and Donna Gibson donated one of her beautiful baskets to be raffled and the proceeds were donated to the Susan G. Korman Foundation. Let’s hope that next year more of our members sign up for mammograms. Early detection is crucial, and when detected early breast cancer is treatable.
The UAW Women’s Committee, along with members of the Alcoa’s Women’s Network teamed up to paint and collect donations for the Community Women’s Shelter. In total they received over $4100 not including the donations of items and clothing. Many of you showed up and lent your hand to uplift the spirit, and environment of our Sisters in the community that are often forgotten. To the members of the Women’s Committee, It is because of your commitment and dedication that our committee has grown, and continues to flourish. Thank you for your service, without you none of the events we held would have been a success.
The winners of the women’s committee raffle held at the health fair were Rick Peck, Rich Turlaak and Celestino Nieves.
In closing I would like to say that it is an honor to be of service to the members of UAW Local 1050. I would like to thank each of you for the generosity that you have shown throughout the year and I wish you all a very safe and wonderful holiday.

In Solidarity,
