60th Anniversary:

On Friday August 15, our local union will celebrate 60 years as a chartered member of the UAW (actual date is August 12). Festivities will be observed on all 3 shifts. A luncheon will be accompanied by musical entertainment. Door prizes will be distributed. This will take place on the front lawn, at Gate 5, under a giant tent. All employees, including retirees, are welcome to attend.

Guests for this event include UAW International representatives, local and state politicians, as well as, company officials. Alcoa has worked together with Local 1050 to help ensure a successful affair.

At 3:00 p.m., the union will host a get-together at the union hall. Music, hors d’vores, and beverages will be served. All are welcome. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Manpower:

An increase in manpower is happening within our plant. Thirty-seven people have been hired for temporary summer help. Recently, the company acknowledged they would hire 20-25 permanent production workers. Also, on the horizon, the Skilled Trades Department will add approximately 6 Millwrights and 4 Electricians. A possible apprenticeship may be in the works in 2009. This is all great news for our plant. Since our manpower has been down for so long, it’s refreshing to see our numbers on the rise.

Safety Awareness:

Be aware of safety concerns and what is required while you’re on the job. When utilizing a tow motor, man lift, or mobile crane, be sure to check the pre-operation card. When making a lift, be sure to know the weight of the load and the capacity of the lifting device you are using. When in doubt, contact your supervisor. The company has disciplined our members for violations, and in one instance administered termination.  Always wear a harness when appropriate. When in doubt, REMEMBER TO ASK.
