Update 5-13-08

Cleveland Works Metatarsal Shoe or Boot Replacement Guidelines

As of Tuesday May 6, 2008 Alcoa has implemented the safety shoe or boot replacement / voucher forms.

The Safety shoe or boot Replacement Program is intended to replace shoes or boots that have been damaged, worn, or destroyed as part of the daily work activities.

When excessive wear or damage occurs the employee must bring this to the attention of his/her supervisor. At that time, the Alcoa Cleveland Works Shoe Replacement / Voucher Form will be completed by the employee’s immediate supervisor.

Cleveland Works Shoe Replacement Form Voucher Criteria

1.       Is the heel or sole separated or beginning to separate from the body of the shoe/boot?

2.       Are there holes in the sole of the shoe/boot or is the sole extremely thin?

3.       Are there any cuts, tears, or other openings in the shoe that could allow chemicals, oil, or coolant to enter the shoe/boot?

NOTE: Sometimes a small hole will get worn in the leather covering over the steel toe area. As a general rule, when this hole reaches the size of a quarter or approximately 1 inch in diameter, the shoe should be replaced.

4.       Are any seams ruptured or any stitching missing?

5.       Are there any “home repairs” made to the shoes such as nails, staples, or tape?

6.       Are any of the eyelets, or lace hooks damaged?

7.       Is the leather rotted or excessively burned?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, your safety shoe or boots are in need of replacement.

NOTE: OSHA requires all personal protective equipment, including foot protection to be used and maintained in reliable condition.

Uniforms

The Union & Alcoa are presently in disagreement when it comes to the company paying for uniforms. Presently Alcoa pays for all FR uniforms.

The deadline for the OSHA Final Rule on PPE is May 15, 2008.

The Union will be following up with the membership in the near future on this matter.

This concludes your Health & Safety Update.
