_Local 1050 was chartered on August 12, 1948. We are in the Independent Parts Supplier sector of the UAW in Region 2B. Our current President is James "Gappy" Burney and the current Regional Director is Dave Green.

In 1978, Local 1050 moved to our present location at 2507 Harvard. This building formerly housed Helen's Kitchen, which served breakfast and lunch to many of our members. The first union meetings were actually held in the basement of this establishment. Eventually, the restaurant became the Union hall that we know today. Our Local also acquired the adjoining building which houses the offices of the Financial Secretary, and visiting Union Attorney.

It is the goal of UAW Local 1050 to constantly monitor and improve the working conditions of its members, and to uphold the standard of living that a committed workforce deserves from a globally profitable employer.

This mission is evidenced by the numerous Strikes that have occurred over the last 50 years, most notably in 1971 (89 days), 1996 (22 days) and 2006 (56 days). Two "wildcat Strikes" also occurred in the 70's.

Although our Local has become adaptive to the “global economy”, it was regrettably necessary to strike, given the surrounding circumstances.

Besides representing our members, Local 1050 is active in our community also. The Executive Board and Standing Committees have promoted volunteerism to aid disabled veterans, women’s shelters and our troops overseas. We console the families of members we’ve lost and are solid advocates in the political arena.

Currently, Local 1050 is 750+ strong with 700+ retirees represented. We remember our past and look forward to the future.
